State of alarm in Spain ends, but coronavirus continues to hit hard

Posted: Saturday May 8, 2021 10:11 PM

We say goodbye to the state of alarm and, with it, to the closure of the perimeter of the Autonomous Communities. Thus, we have regained mobility between regions by moving towards the lowest incidence since March. There are already more medium or low risk areas than arto risk areas. However, as experts warn, this is not the end of the pandemic and we must not let our guard down as Aragon, Euskadi, La Rioja, Madrid, Catalonia and Melilla continue to be exposed. at extreme risks.

Regarding the daily data, the Autonomous Communities which gave figures in the last hours on the situation of the pandemic contributed in total to 4,610 new infections and 41 deaths, which represents a decrease of the positives compared to the last week, where 5,753 had reached. However, in the absence of data from Madrid, deaths are increasing compared to seven days ago when 38 were recorded.

Euskadi, which has the highest incidence rate in the country at 14 days (462 cases per 100,000 inhabitants), was the only one to have tried to maintain the closure of the perimeter. However, justice denied it. In the last few hours, this Community has notified 580 new cases and 174 people remain in the ICUs (15 fewer than the day before). In this sense, it should be noted that in one week, the number of patients admitted to the department fell by a hundred.

Castilla y León, meanwhile, reported 323 new infections and two deaths, while Aragon reported 276 more positives and one death from COVID-19.

Four territories maintain a curfew

With the end of the state of alarm, the curfew also ends in most of Spain, although the carousel of judicial decisions keeps it in the Balearic Islands and Valencia, as well as in Navarre and the Islands. Canary Islands, where they await it must be pronounced by the Superior Court.

Limited hours continue in the hospitality industry

However, limited hours continue in the hospitality industry. In Andalusia, Castilla y León or La Rioja, bars and restaurants must close at midnight, while in Castilla-La Mancha, they can last until 1 hour. Exactly, there, its president, Emiliano García-Page was very critical of the fall of the state of alert and warned: “If there was a big wave, some could say goodbye politically.”

In the case of Andalusia, nightclubs reopen until 2:00 a.m. and you can only dance in level 1 municipalities. In the rest, tables of four people are allowed inside and six at outside, always without exceeding 50% of the capacity. .

In Catalonia, which has reported 1,309 new infections and 20 deaths in the past 24 hours, the limit for six-person meetings remains, while the hospitality industry can work until 11 p.m.

Meanwhile, in Madrid, the hospitality industry closes for an hour (until midnight), and it is recommended that meetings do not exceed six people. Regarding this autonomous community, it should be noted that the incidence is 317 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, or 119 points higher than the Spanish average.

Ximo Puig calls for caution and warns that the virus is still among us

The Valencian Community, which maintains a curfew from 00:00 to 18:00, allows the hospitality industry to remain open until 11:30 p.m., although with 50% of the capacity and meetings of up to ten people are allowed. The president of the Valencian Community, Ximo Puig assures that this is the beginning of a gradual opening, although he asks for responsibilities because, as he warned, the virus is still among us. This community, which has reported 127 new infections in the past 24 hours, has the lowest incidence in the entire country: 40 cases per 100,000 population.

For its part, Galicia, which has registered 191 new cases in recent hours, prohibits meetings between non-partners from 1 a.m. to 6 a.m. Here, active cases fell on the last day, as did hospital pressure, and no deaths were reported. And as far as the hotel industry is concerned, the hours are extended: bars can open until 11:00 p.m. and restaurants until 1:00 a.m., while meetings are limited to four people indoors and six on the terraces.

End of the alarm state with an incidence of 198.6

It was on October 26 that we entered the second state of alert with a cumulative incidence of 410 cases per 100,000 inhabitants and on the rise. This state of alarm made it possible to defeat a third wave in record time. Now this incidence is declining, but not with the weakest data of the entire period. Specifically, we have an incidence of 198.6.

Regarding hospital occupancy, when the state of alarm was triggered, 13% were in hospital beds and 24% in ICU. After the January peak, we closed the cycle with very similar percentages in the intensive care units. For this reason, health workers are concerned about the pressure with which hospitals have bid farewell to the state of alarm.

Vaccination assessment this week: 12.6% of the population is already immune

The good news is the increased vaccination rate: this week we once again set a record in dose delivery. While 2,098,344 doses were administered from April 23 to 30, over the past seven days this figure has increased: more than 2,683,000 have already been administered.

In this way, 12.6% of the population is already vaccinated (received both doses), while 28% have at least one. Asturias is the Community that leads this ranking, which was celebrated by Adrián Barbón, the President of the Principality, who declared that they were beginning to “consolidate the illusion of overcoming the pandemic reinforced by vaccination”.

In fact, a woman from a retirement home who refused to be vaccinated died in Bilbao, as confirmed by the Diputación de Bizkaia.

Attention remains focused on isolated vessels in Vigo

Meanwhile, authorities’ attention is also focused on the new isolated vessel in Vigo. Indeed, in the past few hours, one of the eight crew members who tested positive had to be admitted to hospital. After ruling out that it was the British variant, microbiology services continue to analyze the samples to see what other variant it might be.

In addition, according to External Health, the other vessel, isolated a few days earlier also in the area, is continuing its quarantine and of its eight crew members who tested positive, five are still admitted.
