United Airlines confirms services are back to normal after passengers across US said flights were grounded

Passengers around the US complained that United Airlines had grounded flights on Friday morning.

The airline later said it had fixed a technical problem and that all operations had returned to normal.

Users on Downdetector and Twitter said they had been struggling to access United Airlines' website and app. The first reports were around 5:30 a.m. ET.

Multiple Twitter users said United representatives had told them that there was a United outage and that flights had been grounded.

Passengers said on Twitter that their United flights from airports including George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, Des Moines International Airport Homepage in Iowa, and Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey had been grounded, delayed, or hit by other system outages.

In a statement sent just before 8 a.m. ET, the airline said "technical system issues" had been resolved and operations had returned to normal. "We are working diligently to get customers to their destinations," the airline added.

CBS correspondent Janet Shamlian first reported Friday morning that United was experiencing "a system-wide outage preventing boarding at some at airports across the country." A pilot on a flight departing Denver later told her that the grounding had been lifted, she said.

In response to one Twitter user who asked whether United's system was down about 6:45 am ET, the company said that its teams were "aware that passengers are currently experiencing these issues" and said staff were working to resolve them "as quickly as they can."
